Many believers love the promises of God but avoid His instructions.

They quote, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper,” but ignore the call to holiness.

They celebrate, “My God shall supply all your need,” but resist the discipline of stewardship, obedience and diligent labour.

They rejoice over grace, favour, healing and breakthrough—but become uncomfortable when Scripture addresses correction, sacrifice, submission, forgiveness, purity and responsibility.

Reverend Olusola Areogun said:

“If you are going to be a sound and safe Christian, you must be an all-Scripture Christian and not a favourite-Scripture Christian.”

Christianity becomes dangerous when we select only the parts of the Bible that agree with our desires.

You must allow the promises of Scripture to encourage you, the warnings of Scripture to restrain you, the instructions of Scripture to guide you, and the corrections of Scripture to change you.

The Bible says:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” — 2 Timothy 3:16–17 KJV

Notice that it says all Scripture.

Not only the verses that make you feel comfortable.
Not only the passages that promise increase.
Not only the Scriptures you can use against your enemies.
Not only the portions that support what you have already decided to do.

Every part of God’s Word has a purpose in forming you into the kind of believer God can trust.

A favourite-Scripture Christian may be excited but unbalanced. Such a person can become strong in one truth and dangerously weak in another. They may understand authority but not submission, prosperity but not stewardship, faith but not patience, warfare but not love, or grace but not responsibility.

Paul declared:

“For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.” — Acts 20:27 KJV

The whole counsel of God keeps a believer sound and safe.

You need the Scripture that comforts you, but you also need the Scripture that confronts you. You need the Word that assures you of God’s love, but you also need the Word that exposes your disobedience. You need the promise, the principle, the warning and the command.

The Lord told Joshua:

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” — Joshua 1:8 KJV

God did not tell Joshua to obey according to the portions he preferred. He said, “according to all that is written therein.”

Do not use one Scripture to escape another Scripture.

Do not claim God’s promises while rejecting His principles.

Do not ask the Bible merely to confirm you; allow it to correct, train and transform you.

Become an all-Scripture Christian. That is how you become sound, balanced, mature and safe.
